RED FLAGS
- [!]Lottery / qualifier entry — hard ticket

- [!]Limited Leadville lodging; race week prices spike
- [!]Powerline descent claims crashes every year
- [!]Afternoon thunderstorms and hail possible above timberline
RIDER FIT
The defining demand — acclimated riders win it
Columbine Mine is a 12-mile climb
Sub-9-hr buckle requires deep tempo
Powerline descent rewards bike handling
Pro field, marquee event
Pair with Aspen / Vail trip
A loose, rutted, 1.5-mile climb at 70 miles in, after Columbine has emptied your legs. Most riders walk parts. The riders chasing sub-9 push through and pay for it.
TIRE INTEL
Mostly fire road and double-track means you can run a fast-rolling MTB tire. Most finishers run 2.2" with reinforced casings; tubeless is mandatory in spirit.
WEATHER PLAYBOOK
Mid-August Leadville: dawn near freezing, daytime highs 18-22 °C, afternoon thunderstorms common above timberline. Pack a packable shell and arm warmers for the start.
PACING PLAYBOOK
Fast pavement start. Conserve, find a group, do not chase the lead pack up St. Kevin’s.
Big descent off Sugarloaf into Twin Lakes. Eat hard before Columbine.
The crux. 12 miles up to 3,840 m. Pace by HR; the sub-9 buckle lives or dies here.
Climb back up Powerline (the killer). Final 20 mi back to the red carpet.
WHAT TO FEAR
- [!01]Altitude sickness and HR ceiling
- [!02]Powerline descent crashes
- [!03]Afternoon thunderstorms at the Columbine summit
- [!04]Cracking on the return Powerline climb
- [!05]Dehydration from cold air masking thirst
INSIDER INTEL
“You don’t need power data on Columbine. You need to know your HR ceiling and stay one beat below it.”
TRAVEL OPS
The Race Across the Sky earns its name. Acclimate, pace by HR, and chase the buckle.
