RIDER FIT
Long forest tempo rewards diesel
Constant rolling vert through the forest
UCI qualifier — Worlds slot on the line
Pair with a Galloway riding week
Loose forest descents reward bike handling
Open moor sectors test exposure tolerance
A May day in Galloway can deliver sunshine, sleet, and stinging rain in the same hour. The Gralloch rewards riders who pack for every weather and trust their kit.
TIRE INTEL
Galloway forest tracks are firm in the dry, sloppy in the wet. A semi-slick with side knobs handles both; mud-clearing patterns matter in true wet years.
WEATHER PLAYBOOK
Mid-May Galloway: highs 10-15 °C, lows 4-8 °C, rain in 6 of 10 years. Pack a real waterproof, full-finger gloves, and a thermal base layer.
PACING PLAYBOOK
Fast neutral roll. Find a working group, conserve, do not chase the early surge.
Constant rollers. Smooth power on climbs, eat ahead of the second half.
The most exposed section. Layers on, push through, save legs for the run-in.
Tired forest tracks. Race anyone you bridge to in the last 15 km.
WHAT TO FEAR
- [!01]Cold rain for 5+ hours
